Banner Hanging

Banner Hanging

Turn a few old, graphic doilies into a simple wall hanging using a cast off wooden dowel, some vintage string, and a curtain tie back. What I love about these pieces is their intricate handmade designs that can be shown off so easily with a simple colored background. Creating the sensibility of a mobile gives the pieces the right light and airy relief needed to bring them up to date and display them as art objects. I am especially fond of the larger piece featuring stars. I remember these types of pieces on my grandmother’s furniture held in place with metal corkscrew pins with clear acrylic tops. I think it’s great to re‑invent these pieces today for a fresh and beautiful appreciation of handcrafts from the past.

Lace Coasters

Jenny has always loved vintage hand-loomed tatting and has purchased many pieces at local church fairs. The trouble was figuring out how to showcase them in a modern way without taking away their charm. By having a colored background with the wall hanging you can provide impact and  you get to play a bit more with them and be more inventive.
For these coasters, follow the same instructions as the Decoupage Plates.

Pillow

Pillow

In today’s decorating there seems to be no place for doilies, unless you are fond of the Victorian era. Here is a perfect way to incorporate Grandma’s hand-tatted doilies into today’s modern styles.

We purchased this linen pillow from Linen ‘n Things. It has a zippered cover which makes hand-stitching the doily on just a piece of cake.

Another fun idea is to choose two or three lace pieces that resemble snowflakes.

Lace-wrapped Candle

Lace-wrapped Candle

The pattern this lace creates on the surrounding surface when lit is stunning. We cut this remnant piece of lace to fit the cylinder, then tied it with a bit of seam binding. These types of candleholders can be displayed on a mantle, entry table, or as a centerpiece for a furniture grouping.
